The facility was designed to house up to 200 troops, who could endure extreme weather with temperatures plunging to -56°C and winds reaching 193 km/h.
Despite its cutting-edge construction, which even involved implementing an early model portable nuclear reactor, the instability of the shifting glacial ice forced the abandonment of Project Iceworm. By the year 1967, the site had been deserted, sealing off radioactive waste and other contaminants within its icy tomb.

NASA’s radar technology, known as Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR), unveils subsurface anomalies with remarkable clarity, much like lidar’s capability to unveil long-lost structures such as the Mayan ruins. However, UAVSAR penetrates dense materials using radio waves instead of laser light. “The latest radar readings give us a view of the subterranean architecture once hidden from our sight,” stated Chad Greene.
